I set up my camera before covering a basketball game at my school Jan. 14.
As I stepped into the role of Editor-in-Chief: Online — responsible for overseeing everything from podcasts to videos and photos — I knew I wanted to broaden my skillset and challenge myself in new areas. One of those challenges was tackling my first proper photo gallery. Although I had completed a few in the past, I wasn't particularly proud of any or had even used an actual camera for them. This time, I was determined to push myself, even if I wasn’t confident at first. With support from our Photography Editor who offered guidance and my journalism adviser who reminded me that stepping outside of my comfort zone and asking for help exemplified real leadership, I learned to embrace the discomfort of trying something new — and in the process, discovered how much I enjoy photography.
Below are some pictures from my first ever gallery I reference above. View the full gallery here. Hover over each image to read the caption.
My most recent photo gallery covering the boys varsity basketball team's final home game is the one I’m most proud of — my first time shooting solo with full confidence. I experimented with a variety of angles and perspectives, capturing the fast-paced action and the team’s spirit. View the full gallery here. Hover over each image to read the caption.

Working on this swim meet gallery presented unexpected hurdles due to the strict guidelines that come with photographing swim. For example, I couldn't publish any pictures of the swimmers out of the water if they weren't covered under the shoulders or if you couldn't see their face, which means I had to snap a picture at just the right timing of them breathing. Despite the added complexity, I learned how to creatively frame action shots within these constraints. View the full gallery here. Hover over each image to read the caption.

Collaborating with the Photography Editor on my third gallery for Spirit Week was an exciting challenge since seniors played a huge part in the festivities. The assembly wrapped up at 4:30 p.m., and we had the editor bonding movie night on the same evening, yet we still managed to sift through over a thousand photos and publish the gallery that very day. Even with the tight turnaround, I was proud of the images we captured, which showcased the students' spirit and kept our coverage both timely and impactful. View the full gallery here.
This was my second attempt at a gallery — I noticed my photography was improving, but I still felt uncertain with each shot I took. However, I am proud of certain shots like the angle of the first picture below. View the full gallery here.
I covered the West London Model United Nations conference held at my school Feb. 1. The pictures below were published in an Instagram post, which can be viewed here. There is also a longer caption for each picture within that link.
I've also taken my fair share of single pictures for event coverage. Below are a variety from events on and off campus. Click on the image to view the caption and a higher quality version of the image.

On The Standard, we alternate between three different ways to display photo galleries. Below are examples of each.
In my role of Editor-in-Chief: Online, I want to ensure we cover as many events as possible. When events like those below come around (oftentimes school wide outings), I send an email to all staff members with instructions on how to contribute to a staff wide photo gallery.
