Hi, I'm Sophia!
Welcome to my Journalism Portfolio
I'm a freshman at Northwestern University pursuing a bachelor's degree in journalism and political science with a minor in data science. Outside of academics, I'm an editor for The Daily Northwestern and involved in Northwestern's chapter of Spoon University, a national food magazine. By the end of this year, I'll have earned a certificate in enlightened disagreement sponsored by Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management.
In the fall of 2026, I'll be studying in Washington, D.C., through Northwestern's Medill on the Hill program. I'll be covering the midterm elections, White House and federal policy, reporting on deadline with an official press pass for publication on MOTH’s website and with professional media outlets.
In high school, I served as the Editor-in-Chief: Online of The Standard, The American School in London's internationally award-winning student-led publication. In my role, I oversaw The Standard's website, broadcast and social media while leading a staff of 89 students, editing a total of 380 stories during my tenure. I have previously worked at Newsreel, the House of Commons, MediaWise, Agência Lupa and Ballotpedia. I also attended the Medill-Northwestern Journalism Institute in 2024.
Outside of journalism, I have experience in computer science, having worked as a volunteer Python teacher, completed a data science internship and written my own introduction to Python programming book in Portuguese.
In May 2025, I was named one of six finalists in the Journalism Education Association's National Journalist of the Year competition. To learn more about this award, please visit the SJOY Portfolio page. A complete list of my awards can be found below.
