Hi, I'm Sophia!

Welcome to my Journalism Portfolio

I'm an incoming journalism and political science student at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in the Class of 2029. In college, I plan to further my journalism career and join The Daily Northwestern and the Northwestern News Network.

In high school, I served as the Editor-in-Chief: Online of The Standard, The American School in London's internationally award-winning student-led publication. In my role, I oversaw The Standard's website, broadcast and social media while leading a staff of 89 students, editing a total of 380 stories during my tenure. Since February 2024, I've been interning at Newsreel, a news app startup working to combat news avoidance. Previously, I have worked at the House of Commons, MediaWise, Agência Lupa, and Ballotpedia. In the summer of 2024, I attended the Medill-Northwestern Journalism Institute.

In the spring of 2025, I was named the International Journalist of the Year by the Journalism Education Association, recognizing me as the top high school journalist outside of the U.S. for my portfolio, and I later went on to be one of six finalists for National Journalist of the Year.

As part of my Journalist of the Year entry, I was asked to submit letters of recommendation from people who have worked closely with me in a journalism setting. I am extremely grateful for their words and cannot thank them enough. If you're interested in learning more about my experience, you can read the letters below.

Of all the words I could give to describe Sophia and her journalistic brilliance, the all-encompassing 'remarkable' might be her best descriptor, because Sophia fulfills the meaning of the word to a tee.

Jaden Gardiola, Broadcast Editor at The Standard (high school newspaper)

Sophia’s work as a reporter demonstrates what it means for a student journalist to embody the role of a watchdog who exposes issues and sparks change ... Sophia's article [on sexism] shaped how I lead the school this year.

Natalie Maisey, Interim High School Principal at the American School in London

Sophia is the rare type of student whose motivation comes from within. She constantly strives to be a better version of herself and works to improve with each interview, each story, and each day as a leader.

Louisa Avery, Journalism Teacher at the American School in London
